Dr. Martin chose osteopathic medicine over allopathic medicine, aligning with its holistic philosophies. She believed in treating the whole person – their emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. To provide the best care possible, she spent hundreds of hours learning about the diagnosis and treatment of the musculoskeletal system.
Before starting her practice in St. Mary’s county, Dr. Martin held various positions that enriched her expertise. She served as the medical director of skilled nursing facilities and urgent care centers. She also represented the American Osteopathic Association public relations board, assisting journalists with verifying facts and interviews. Furthermore, Dr. Martin volunteered as an assistant clinical professor at the College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pomona, California, training over 75 medical students in her family practice over 18 years.
In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Martin was a dedicated mother to triplets, whom she delivered herself. Her passion for education extended to her role as a volunteer mentor and clinical instructor for Chamberlain University, where she trained nurse practitioner students.
Dr. Martin’s accomplishments were not limited to her medical career. As a talented athlete, she won the gold medal for golf in her age group at the Senior Olympics and was set to represent Maryland in the National Senior Olympics. Previously, she had been the Maryland state champion in golf for her age group. Dr. Martin also excelled in tennis, becoming a finalist in the United States Tennis Association’s 65-and-over nationals at the 3.5 level, a remarkable achievement considering the thousands of players in the US, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica.
Sixteen years ago, Dr. Martin established her medical practice in St. Mary’s county. She was determined to treat anyone, regardless of their insurance status. Her practice was one of three independent medical practices in the county, not controlled by corporate medicine. Dr. Martin was a tireless advocate for her patients, ensuring they had access to specialists and hospitals while valuing the continuity of care.
Dr. Katherine Martin’s exceptional medical care, combined with her dedication to her patients and their families, made her a beloved figure in St. Mary’s county. Her journey from a teacher to a doctor, mother, and athlete demonstrated her unwavering commitment to nurturing and empowering those around her. Through her holistic approach, she continued to inspire her patients to live their lives to the fullest – in body, mind, and spirit.
